Remote Engine Start is a genuine BMW factory option — hardware that's already sitting in most G-series cars with a BDC3 body controller, just switched off in software. This page explains what the feature does, what your car needs to qualify, and how the coding is actually carried out.
Remote Start is a genuine BMW factory feature. It's activated the same way any factory option is enabled after the fact — through coding, not through modifying the engine software.
With Remote Start active, locking the car and pressing the lock button on the key fob three times in quick succession starts the engine remotely. The vehicle stays locked and cannot be put into gear or driven until a valid key is inside the cabin — the engine runs only to let the climate system pre-condition the interior.
On supported cars the feature is also exposed through the MyBMW / BMW Connected app, so the same remote start and stop can be triggered from a phone rather than the fob itself.
Remote Start coding doesn't add hardware — it switches on a routine that depends on specific control units already being present. Four things determine eligibility.
The Body Domain Controller must be the third-generation BDC3 unit, found on G-series cars from roughly 2019 onward. Earlier FEM/BDC or BDC2-based cars aren't eligible for this coding path.
The infotainment head unit needs to run iDrive 7 (ID7), 8, or 8.5 — the software that renders the remote-start status and countdown in the cluster and app.
Diesel engines are excluded because of cold-start emissions behaviour, and manual-transmission cars are excluded for rollaway/anti-lurch safety reasons. This is a hard requirement, not a preference.
Coding is performed over the OBD port using an ENET (OBD-to-Ethernet) interface cable connected to a Windows laptop, or a Mac running Windows via Boot Camp or a VM.
Exact eligibility is always confirmed against the individual VIN — production dates and facelift cut-offs vary by market. The table below is a general starting point, not a guarantee.

Activating Remote Start is a coding job, not an ECU tune — nothing about the engine's software is touched. It has two parts: adding the option to the car's electronic order, then coding the individual modules that carry it out.
The chassis number is checked to confirm BDC3 hardware, iDrive version, and a qualifying petrol/automatic drivetrain before anything else happens.
BMW's system generates a unique certificate tied to that VIN, which is then programmed into the car so the relevant modules recognize the option as active.
Related control units — body controller, cluster, chassis, climate, and central gateway — are coded with the parameters that make the three-press trigger and preconditioning work together.
The lock-lock-lock sequence is tested at the fob, the shutdown timer is checked, and the feature's status is confirmed in the cluster and app.

Diesel exclusion relates to cold-start emissions behaviour during unattended idling; manual-transmission exclusion is a rollaway safety measure, since there's no automatic "park" state to rely on.
An ENET (OBD-to-Ethernet) interface cable, a laptop capable of running BMW's coding software, and a stable connection to the car's OBD port. A stable power supply during coding matters — a voltage drop mid-write is the most common cause of a failed session.
Coding an option that BMW already built the hardware for is generally treated differently from performance or emissions tuning, but rules vary by country and can affect warranty coverage or emissions compliance. Check local regulations and your dealer's warranty terms before proceeding.
